The Best Shipping Methods For Your Holiday Shipping

The right transportation mode can be incredibly helpful when delivering those gifts and packages before the joyous season ends.

Whether you’re looking for something fast, cost-effective, or secure, there’s a mode of shipment that perfectly fits what you need!

This blog post will discuss various logistics transportation modes that you can utilize to help you meet your holiday shipping goals.

Full Truckload (FTL)

Full truckload shipping is a great option when you need to ship high volumes of goods quickly and efficiently. This option is ideal when you have enough freight to take up an entire truck. FTL shipments don’t require consolidation or loading into other vehicles.

The downside is that FTL shipments can be expensive due to the large amount of space needed on the truck and the fuel cost for long-distance hauls.

Partial Truckload (PTL)

Partial truckload shipping is a good choice if you don’t have enough freight to fill an entire truck but still need space for larger shipments.

With this option, you will consolidate your freight with other loads to fill up one full trailer before shipping.

PTL often costs less than FTL shipping since multiple companies share the fuel and other expenses associated with long-distance hauling. However, the shipment may take longer to arrive due to delays caused by longer consolidation and loading times.

Less Than Truckload (LTL)

Like partial truckloads, LTL shipments involve consolidating multiple smaller loads into one full trailer to transport them more efficiently.

However, LTL requires even less freight than PTL — usually just enough freight that it takes up between three and six pallets or boxes. It’s perfect if you have smaller packages that don’t require a full truckload of space but still need extra storage.

The downside is that LTL shipping can be more expensive than FTL or PTL because of the additional costs of consolidating multiple smaller loads into one trailer.

Intermodal Shipment

Intermodal shipment combines different transportation modes to move freight from point A to point B more quickly and efficiently than traditional methods allow.

This option typically requires complex logistics coordination between carriers. Still, it can help reduce costs significantly while improving transit times thanks to its reliance on multiple modes.

The downside is that intermodal shipments can be difficult for shippers unfamiliar with this method. Intermodal cargo requires advanced planning and coordination between carriers for everything to run smoothly during transit time frames and upon arrival at its destination point(s).
